LTSA successfully completed a project with Danish and Finnish road accident investigation authorities

Lithuanian transport safety administration has successfully finished project “Road accident investigation: best practices, procedures and measures to strengthen road safety” activities. Project which involved two Nordic partners – Danish Road Traffic Accident investigation board together with Danish Road Administration and Finnish Crash Data Institute have been initiated to provide a platform for exchange of good practices, knowledge, and experience in the context of road accident investigation. Project was partly funded by the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Public Administration.

Activities of the project involved two study visits: in Helsinki and Copenhagen where Lithuanian experts participated in discussions and practical workshops with colleagues and specialists from Nordic countries.

First study visit was held in Helsinki at Finnish Crash Data Institute on September 26th – 28th. Three days of active discussions and practical engagements provided an opportunity for experts to cover various of topics related to road accident investigation: starting with overview of general procedures of investigation, involvement of different personnel, training of investigators and drawing up of recommendations for road safety improvements. Finnish colleagues presented their data analysis methods and engagement of data for scientific research. Lithuanian experts also had a chance to visit crash sites to see how data gathering procedures are carried out and what are common accidents in Finland.

Similar topics were covered during second part of the project – a visit in Copenhagen on November 7th – 8th where Danish Road Traffic Accident investigation board together with Danish Road Administration experts shared their knowledge and good practices in relation to accident investigation. LTSA’s representatives have shared our own procedures and general experience in this regard, presented our own methods and analysis approach. Further discussions and presentations from Danish partners provided a chance to compare national practices, evaluate points of similarities and weigh possible differences in this context. Two-day visit proved to be a great experience for participating experts and yielded possibilities for further communication and cooperation between Danish and Lithuanian road accident investigators.

Both visits provided a chance to better understand and analyze practices of road accident investigation in Nordic countries – one of the leading examples in the context of road safety. With successful feedback and results provided by the project it has also established future cooperation possibilities and direct communication networks.

The project was partly funded by the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Public Administration administered by the Nordic Council of Ministers’. The Nordic-Baltic Mobility and Network Programme for Public Administration gives financial support to civil servants and other staff with similar functions from the Nordic and Baltic countries to carry out study visits, internships, or network activities in Baltic or Nordic countries, as appropriate.
