Authorized classification societies

In accordance with the provisions of article 5, part 1, paragraph 3 of the Law on Safe Navigation of the Republic of Lithuania, the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration (hereinafter – the Administration) carries out inspections of ships sailing under the Lithuanian State flag and issues the required mandatory documents. 

Based on article 8, paragraph 1 of the same Law, only ship classification societies authorized by orders of the Director of the Administration, in accordance with the procedure established by the Minister of Transport, may—on behalf of the Republic of Lithuania—carry out technical supervision and inspections of ships sailing under the Lithuanian State flag, in compliance with the international treaties of the Republic of Lithuania, European Union legal acts, and the laws of the Republic of Lithuania, and issue the corresponding confirming documents. 

Currently, the Administration has authorized the following ship classification societies to perform technical supervision and inspections of ships sailing under the Lithuanian State flag and to issue the corresponding confirming documents: 

• AMERICAN BUREAU OF SHIPPING (ABS) 
• BUREAU VERITAS (BV) 
• DNV AS 
• LLOYD’S REGISTER (LR) 
• NIPPON KAIJI KYOKAI 
• POLSKI REJESTR STATKÓW S.A. 
• REGISTRO ITALIANO NAVALE (RINA S.p.A.)

Additional requirements for ships: 

• Inspection of ship radio, navigation, and fire-fighting equipment 
• Compliance with the requirements of international conventions 
• Compliance with requirements for the bridge navigational watch alarm system 
• Use of electronic versions of nautical publications 
• Application of the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships to Lithuanian vessels
